theory research pedagogy
Until recently, I thought research meant mining articles on JSTOR looking for articles to support my thesis. Then I enrolled in Dr. Joyce Kinkead's Introduction to Composition Studies class, where we learned about different types of research methodologies.
Armed with this new knowledge and a desire to understand the rhetorical role of writing center tutors, I constructed a mixed-methods research study. My findings led me to a deeper research question: how do tutors see themselves rhetorically when they meet with students?
To discover this, I began collaborating with Susan Andersen, the assistant director of the USU Writing Center. Together we used both quantitative and qualitative research to find an answer. Despite the tedious nature of the IRB approval process (which inspired my love/hate relationship with primary research), I found elation in our final product. Now I can't see myself working in academia without using the tools I learned from that project.
